I’ve decided to have some fun. I have just opened a blank page and set a timer. I gave myself five minutes to come up with something. The deal is not to edit it, just to write something. The timer is ticking as I write. I want to see what will happen…
I guess you could say I was lacking inspiration and then was inspired with this “five minute” idea to challenge myself. It’s making me smile because I can clearly see that it would be very easy for me to cop out of this one. After all, who would know whether I actually did it or not? And who would know whether I took a few more minutes to write this or not? Well I have exactly two minutes left and this little exercise has shown me that if I’m not exactly standing on the edge of the cliff having to “do something” or “perform” somehow because it’s do or die, then it’s not enough for me to come up with instant inspiration. Or is it? Was I inspired when the idea to do a 5-minute challenge came to me?
Well, my five minutes are up and this is what I came up with. Is it inspiration or bullshit?

Very interesting… The way I see it is that even if you had come up with something and had been inspired, by the time you finished explaining the experiment, there was no time left to actually write it out.
I think it’s difficult to put a timeline on inspiration!
I agree with you though, you can’t put a timeline on inspiration.
I personally work well under pressure since I am a last minute person so this could work for me. Is it inspiration or bullshit…..it could be both. You could have been inspired to bullshit for 5 minutes. None the less it is good to hear from you and to know that even you lack inspiration from time to time. Do you think you could apply this same timeline to photography and end up with a great picture? I might try it. Stay inspired and have a great day. That was my 5 minutes of inspiration or bull shit.
Oh Sue, I absolutely love that, “you could have been inspired to bullshit for 5 minutes”!! That’s brilliant.
Now about the photography, yes I do think it works to put a timeline and get a great picture. We’re seeing it in the workshops all the time and I work with those timelines when I’m shooting for clients. With photography I don’t feel the stress of coming up with something, I expect it. Writing is a different story for me.
Okay, now I’ve just contradicted myself because I just told Sonya that you can’t put a timeline on inspiration and now I’m telling you that it works. So maybe I’m just full of bullshit today!
