Getting off the fence!

At last!  I’m getting off the fence.  How many years have I been carrying on this discussion in my head.  I want to write…my stories, my experiences, share my photographs and stuff.  Yes, I decided this a while back and then promptly engaged in a huge debate about it in my head.  It had to be thought out and planned and organized and god knows what all else.  What would I write about?  Why would I write?  Who would read it?  What format should it be in and all that.  Geez, meanwhile, here I am giving photography workshops and I tell people to let go of all those mind discussions and just do it!  Look at this fence…clearly it was on my mind to get off the fence when I shot this.  But honestly, how comfortable is it really to be sitting on the fence?  Have you ever seen a fence that is actually comfortable enough to sit on for any length of time?  Have you???  Sitting on the fence is just plain uncomfortable, whether you’re sitting on it literally or figuratively.  Tell me, how comfortable is it really to sit on the fence?

Here’s my fence.  You like?  Comfy eh?  Nah…I’m jumpin’ on that train now.  Time to get moving.  Enough hypocrisy from me…well, for now.

For the past 2 years I’ve been publishing a newsletter.  It’s been 21 issues so far.  Lately I’ve been thinking about changing the format of my newsletter…for something different.  I want to write more freely.  I guess that’s the best way to describe the motivation behind that thought.  Mind you, I say that and yet since it was my newsletter, I was doing it the way I wanted to anyway.  It’s been a fun exercise and I’ve learned a lot.  It was a photography newsletter, specifically.  Ah, there it is…I don’t want to restrict myself solely to the topic of photography.  There is so much more.  Of course I can do that change in my newsletter and for the mostpart, I have.  But this is a different format which I think will be fun to work with now. I can evolve and grow into this format because I have much more freedom to change it, add things to it, and basically have fun with it. Plus, this format is interactive. You too can join in on the discussion, tell me what you think, tell others what you think… Ooooo, I’m excited!!!

Why do we write?  Or shoot?  Why do we dance or sing or do anything expressive for that matter? Because we feel like it.  That’s one good reason.  And I feel like doing this now…so here I am.  Just like that.  This time, I have decided that the more I think about it, the less I will do it.  I will turn it again into a huge task that first needs to be planned, thought out and completely figured out before I start.  What the hell!!!  Just do it!  Yes, just start and then we’ll see where we go from there.  That sounds like much more fun to me.  After all, it’s always been fun…I have never been disappointed…when I approach things that way.

And so begins this new adventure…  I wonder where this train is headed.

  1. It will be interesting to see what you find on the other side of the fence. They say the grass is always greener, but that’s probably just because from the other side of the fence the light hits it in a different way. :)

Good luck, not that you need it.

    • Hi Patrick,

I was trying to comment on your blog today but I can’t figure out how to post a comment. It’s asking me to sign in to accounts that I don’t have. Is there another way to post a comment without having a Google account or AIM or one of the other options? I’d love to post on your blog too!!
